    Description

Large-format fold-out 1942 map of the Theater of War in the Pacific Ocean, printed more than 78 years ago.
This map was issued two months after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and shows the vast sweep of the Pacific Ocean, from Asia and Australia to the Americas, centered on the Hawaiian Islands.
It opens to 20½" x 26½" and was compiled and drawn in the cartographic section of the National Geographic Society.
The map locates naval bases and railroads, and it shows mandates and possessions, with wonderful detail throughout, including the Defense Highway across Australia, the island of Los Jardines ("existence doubtful") in the Marianas, air-line distances, steamship routes, and more.
This map was a popular one in many American homes during the Second World War, and it let citizens across the land follow the action in the Pacific theater, as battles were fought on many of the islands that became household words, including Iwo Jima, Saipan, Wake, Luzon, Borneo, Tarawa, New Guinea, the Marianas, Carolines, Marshalls, and many more.
It was issued as a supplement to the February 1942
    National Geographic Magazine
and is one of the most sought-after and enduring of the many fine maps issued by the National Geographic Society.
    This is the
    original

    not
a reproduction or modern reprint, and it is fully guaranteed to be genuine.
