LVABI-Laser Velocimeter Auto-Covariance Buffer Interface for GPIB
For sale- what appears to be a custom interface box to allow digital communication between GPIB/IEEE-488 computers and LVABI, or “Laser Velocimeter Auto-Covariance Buffer Interface.”
From the two references I can find for it online it would appear to be something developed by NASA to help computers of the day handle massive amounts of real time data, and to perhaps commercialize the finished product.
“Microprocessor-controlled interface (IEEE-488/LVABI) incorporates service-request and direct-memory-access features. Is circuit card enabling digital communication between system called "laser auto-covariance buffer interface" (LVABI) and compatible personal computer via general-purpose interface bus (GPIB) conforming to Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Standard 488. Interface serves as second interface enabling first interface to exploit advantages of GPIB, via utility software written specifically for GPIB. Advantages include compatibility with multitasking and support of communication among multiple computers. Basic concept also applied in designing interfaces for circuits other than LVABI for unidirectional or bidirectional handling of parallel data up to 16 bits wide.”
NASA was apparently working on this project in conjunction with Macrodyne.
“The LVABI has application in a variety of research, industrial and defense functions that require precise flow measurement.
It is, for example, used in parametric measurements of fluid flow in chemical processing and electricity flow in utility operations.
Customers include a number of government and private research laboratories, university research centers, industrial companies and electric power utilities.”
Whether this is a prototype piece or part of whatever production run Macrodyne might have had to satisfy these customers I have no idea.
