Glass # 1 (of 12)WHITEFRIARS QUEEN ELIZABETH II COMMEMORATIVE CORONATION GOBLET COLOR TWIST STEM
THIS IS A CLASSIC WHITEFRIARS PIECE, MADE TO COMMEMORATE THE ENGLISH ROYAL CORONATION OF HER ROYAL HIGHNESS QUEEN ELIZABETH II ON JUNE 2ND, 1953. THESE WERE INDIVIDUALLY HAND-MADE IN A LIMITED EDITION, AND A SIMILAR EXAMPLE CAN BE SEEN ON PAGE 327 OF ‘WHITEFRIARS GLASS JAMES POWELL & SONS OF LONDON BY WENDY EVANS, CATHERINE ROSS AND ALEX WERNER (PUBLISHED BY THE MUSEUM OF LONDON 1995). IT IS TRULY STUNNING, WITH A COMPLEX COLOR TWIST IN THE STEM CONSISTING OF AN INTERTWINED DOUBLE HELIX OF RED AND BLUE, SURROUNDED BY A MULTI-STRANDED HELIX OF WHITE. THE BOWL OF THE GOBLET IS ENGRAVED WITH A CORONET ABOVE THE WORDS ‘2nd E II R June’ BELOW WHICH IS ENGRAVED ‘1953’, ALL IN CALLIGRAPHIC SCRIPT.
IT IS UNDERSTOOD THAT IT WAS W.J. WILSON WHO WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE CALLIGRAPHIC ENGRAVING AT WHITEFRIARS. HE IS CREDITED FOR HELPING TO REVIVE THE TECHNIQUE OF DIAMOND POINT ENGRAVING IN THE 1930s. WILSON BOTH DESIGNED AND EXECUTED MANY OF POWELL’S IMPORTANT COMMEMORATIVE COMMMISSIONS DURING THE 1950s, SUCH AS THE BOWL PRESENTED TO SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL WHEN HE CREATED THE FIRST FREEMAN OF HARROW IN 1955, AND THE GOBLET PRESENTED IN THE SAME YEAR TO ROGER BANNISTER, THE FIRST MAN TO RUN THE FOUR-MINUTE MILE.
From my own personal collection! I Have TWELVE glasses to find new homes for:
* I have six glasses like this one: QE II Whitefriars June 2, 1953
color twist stems. [My glasses #1 -5 and #12]
* I have A similar glass for the coronation of her Father, George VI, 12 May 1937 [My glass #6]
* I have A PAIR of pedestal stem tumblers:
One for the coronation of her Father, George VI on 12
May 1937 [My glass #7]
And a second one
for her Uncle Edward's PLANNED
but
aborted coronation scheduled for 12 May 1937. [#8]
I do not believe that these tumblers are "Whitefriars"!
They are especially interesting because they were BOTH
manufactured for the "same" event - the coronation of A
successor to King George VI. Edward succeeded upon the
death of his father, but he was not scheduled for coronation
until 12 May 1937 - and he voluntarily abdicated, so that his
younger brother (Elizabeth II's father) was coronated instead!
* A drawn Trumpet Goblet for the coronation of Elizabeth II's Father,
George VI on 12 May 1937 [My glass #9]
* VERY similar drawn Trumpet Goblet for HER coronation on
on 2 June 1953 [My glass 11]
& a very rare QE II Coronation Goblet with a round funnel bowl on a complex coin stem. [My glass #10] [See my separate listing!]
This particular listing is for JUST one glass: My Glass #1.
If you want more or others ask or make an offer. I will combine shipping and can provide as many a 5 perfect goblets like this, as well as one (my #12) which has been repaired. [See the last photo: the glass has had the join between the bowl and stem re-established.]
THE QE II WHITEFRIARS GLASSES #1-5 ARE EACH IN VERY FINE, AS NEW
CONDITION.
APPROX. 8" IN HEIGHT, 4" DIAMETER ACROSS THE RIM AND 3.5" ACROSS THE FOOT. GLASS # 12 IS REPAIRED, ORIGINALLY MADE IN THREE PIECES IT SEPARATED FROM ITS FOOT AND HAS BEEN RESTORED WITH DISHWASHER PROOF EPOXY
